Lila Rui Lan

Bb.1996, China, living and working in London.

Her artistic works that encompass photography, collage, video and interactive installation, examine how the mechanism of different systems affect and discipline each individual, what is the role of technology in the process. Looking into the tension between human and technology, as well as the system such technology serves, Searching for a new narrative of our interaction with the system.

With the distinctive visual aesthetic, Lila develops the game structure as a
critique of agency/participation in social systems, using the language of the
system to reveal the absurdity within. In ‘Kill Heroes’ project, audiences are
encouraged to engage in the process, to figure out what happened and relate
it to the reality they are living in. She puts an emphasis on the interaction
between audience and artwork, guiding audiences to reflect on their roles and
situation in the society.

In her collages, Lila applies images sourcing from personal archives, the internet
and AI generated images to deconstruct and reconstruct the original image,
abstracting the perceptions that attach to specificity and reflecting on what lies
beyond appearances. These works not just exist as artworks itself, but also as a
collection of data to support Lila’s research in the logical difference between
human and technology.
